What is sound deadening?
Adding sound deadening material to your van helps to reduce the noise inside. The main sources would be the engine, tyres and wind. Sound deadening material comes in 2 forms.
The first material is a high density butyl mat. The noises and vibrations created from the van being in motion cause the metal panels to vibrate and amplify the noises, much like a speaker. Adding the mat reduces the vibration and thus reducing the noise. The more material you add, the less the panel can vibrate.
The second material is a foam material, available in a variety of thickness and designed to work slightly differently. The main purpose is to remove the airborne noises, but some materials can also offer a level of insulation at the same time. The material is applied on top of the mat and can be applied behind the doors, roof and sides of the van. Due to its thickness, it’s not normally suitable under the floor but there are also higher density foams that aren’t as thick than can be applied under the existing flooring.
What is insulation?
Insulation is much the same as the insulation you would find in your home. It’s designed to keep the inside cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This is where the foam sound deadening material and insulation can often be combined as a single material to both reduce airborne noise and insulate.
You can go over board with insulation, but the biggest source of heat transfer is always going to be the single glazed window. Tinting the rear windows from the B-pillar back can help with this.
Quality of materials and finish
With a market place full of products, there is lots to choose from. A lot of competitors will use the cheapest products available just to be able to say a van has had sound deadening and insulation applied.
